About This Course Pack

Enjoy this pre-made course pack that can be customized to your needs. Take the whole pack or pieces that work for you! The collection lays a foundation for picking and choosing from lesson plans and activities for each of the 8 main thematic digital literacy competencies so that students can be ready to participate in digital society, specifically in post-secondary communities that they are learning and working with.

This Course Pack provides:

  • A general overview of what digital literacy is and its thematic competencies (based on B.C.’s Post-Secondary Digital Literacy Framework)

  • Self-assessment quizzes to find out where your students are at

  • Some sample lesson plans that function as a guide to use available resources to teach 8 competencies

This course pack is tailored for all BC post-secondary instructors who teach any topic. It provides modules and activities crafted to bolster teaching and introducing eight fundamental digital literacy competencies within the context of BC Post-Secondary Education.  In each module you will find:

  • teaching materials (lesson plans in document format, slides)

  • In each lesson, you will find a selection of suggested activities that are designed for easy adoption or adaption. These activities engage students with the competencies outlined in the BC Digital Literacy Framework.

Those lessons have been developed by Gwen Nguyen, Teaching and Learning Advisor at BCcampus (gnguyen@bccampus.ca) and undergone a review process by external experts specializing in learning design affiliated with BC Post-Secondary Institutions.

Adhering to the E.E.R Framework

We try to introduce and use the open resources in our BC DL OER site. These resources are structured to encourage a dynamic learning process through the proposed Explore-Engage-Reflect (E.E.R) framework, prompting a shift from basic definition or introduction to interactive discussions and reflective learning experiences.

E.E.R Framework Components:

  • Explore: Instructors can start with this step when introducing the topic to learners (Watch tutorials/Read to understand the definition or discover an overview of the topic)

  • Engage: After an initial exploration, instructors can follow some activities in this step to help learners with a deeper level of engagement with the topic (for example, Discuss Student responsibility in the Shared Responsibility Framework of Academic Integrity)

  • Reflect: In this step, the instructor will find suggestions on using some quizzes for students’ self-assessment on a particular topic or designing some activities that allow students to demonstrate what they have learned
