About This Course Pack
This course pack is intended to be used in conjunction with the open textbook Key Concepts of Intermediate Level Math and to meet the goals of intermediate math in the British Columbia Adult Basic Education program. This course is intended to help students build confidence in approaching mathematics, thinking critically, and feeling that they are reflected in mathematics learning.
This course enables students to broaden their understanding of mathematical concepts and extend their mathematical skills through problem solving. Students will estimate reasonably and create models with mathematics in situational contexts. Students will cement their mathematical skills and thinking strategies as they solve many multi-step problems. They will also explore, analyze, and apply mathematical ideas to realistic word problems and projects.
This course pack was designed to help students reach their full potential in intermediate math. It could be used for face-to-face, hybrid (blended), or fully online learning. Students will be assessed using assignments, unit tests, and a final exam, all of which have been carefully curated over years of teaching.
The self-test in each unit checks students’ understanding of the material. Students can either take the self-test before beginning the unit to preview and determine how much they already know about the topic or take it at the end to review the unit contents.
There is a unit test to be taken at the end of each unit, as well as a final exam that the instructor can use to assess the students’ understanding and give students specific feedback on their strengths and how to improve in the course.
Extra resources in the course pack include optional projects with real-life applications that can assist students who need additional practice.
