Mathematics of Finance

Description

These lesson plans are designed to be used in conjunction with the workbook and video tutorials in this package. The instructor may use any mathematics of finance textbook as a supplement. However, it is not necessary and learning outcomes can easily be met by following the workbook.

Some supplementary materials, such as test banks and instructor manuals, for open courses in the B.C. OER Collection are restricted to instructors. If you are an instructor who is using or evaluating an open course and would like to access faculty-only material, please email projects@bccampus.ca using your institutional email address to help us verify that you are an instructor.

Note: Each instructor request is vetted before material is provided. Faculty members who receive these materials are asked to not post them publicly or share them with students.

Learning Outcomes

  • Calculate variables using both simple and compound interest;
  • Construct loan repayment and amortization schedules;
  • Calculate variables using annuities formulas, including bond market value calculations;
  • Describe the features of promissory notes, bonds, and annuities;
  • Judge if a project is viable based on a Net Present Value calculation;
  • Demonstrate the interaction between interest rates and market prices for bonds;
  • Communicate using financial terminology;
  • Solve common business problems employing mathematics of finance.
